Learning the basics of jQuery
jQuery isn’t that tough. Even if you’re not a developer. Do you know a little CSS? How about this one: Do you know what verbs and nouns are? If you’ve answered yes to these questions, you’re ready to rock. Core topics include:
- The basics of CSS selectors
- The basics of the Document Object Model
- Anatomy of a jQuery function
- How jQuery makes it simple to manipulate your web page
- Testing jQuery live using your browser’s console
- What does “chaining” mean in jQuery
- Tour and live examples of jQuery UI
Writing your first plugin
Okay, so you’ve figured out how to do some super awesome thing on your page. You want to be able to re-use that super awesome thing on other sites. Time to create your own jQuery plugin. Core topics include:
- Your first plugin: Hello, World!
- Your second plugin: Setting options and defaults
Enhancing your SharePoint UI
- Your third plugin: Creating color-coded SharePoint calendars without inline styles
- Just a little note on that one: No inline styles, and even better, no having to update your code every time you add a category to your Calendar.
- Bonus note: How about syncing those colors with Outlook 2010, and while we’re at it, syncing Event Categories with Outlook 2010?
- Your fourth plugin: Making SharePoint info (page edit mode, user ID, etc.) available to your CSS via body classes
- Your fifth plugin: Audience participation – We’ll create one last plugin LIVE in the class! Learn how it’s done in the real world!
